BASEQ Cyril Campbell Memorial Award
for the Continuing Support of & Dedication
to the Promotion Of Blues Music in South East Queensland

After the sad passing of our much loved member and supporter Cyril Campbell in 2005 and with the blessing of his family, BASEQ instituted an annual award in his honour in 2006. Cyril's family gave their strong support for the award to continue this year. The winner of the award is selected from nominations submitted by the general membership of BASEQ. Members cannot nominate themselves.

The first award, conducted in 2006, went to "the Colonel" Mark Doherty, not for his excellent music, but for his overall contribution to the blues scene in South East Queensland, as an organiser and supporter of Blues and as a Blues writer and radio presenter of long and excellent standing.

The 2007 award was presented at the Birthday Fest on October 13th to Andrew Café of the Royal Mail Hotel in Goodna (which is out to the West of Brisbane). Andrew's contribution over many years has been to tirelessly promote Blues music at the Royal Mail, to the point now where well known Blues musicians country-wide and from overseas make a point of seeking a gig at the hotel.

The Cyril Campbell Award aims to recognise contribution towards the fostering of blues in South East Queensland and is not a prize for excellence in music. A wide range of people would qualify for nomination. For example it could be won by a venue; venue owner; individual or group (Non Musician); a record label; radio station/program or presenter; a music technician; a journalist or photographer.

The Award will we hope continue into the future. Members who want to put in a nomination should bear in mind that we would like the nominee to be a true supporter of the genre, dedicated to the support and promotion of Blues Music in South East Queensland and with a proven track record in this regard. We will call for nominations in 2008 when they become due.
