BASEQ - Women In Blues Event
July 12th

Hot on the heels of the very successful Muddy Waters Tribute, the Blues Association is delighted to announce another fantastic major event coming up soon - The Women In Blues Show, to be held on Saturday July 12th at Souths Leagues Club, Davies Park, West End.

The event, which will start at 7.30pm, will celebrate women writing and performing the blues, both now and in times past. We are delighted to be able to say that the headline act for the evening will be Australia’s “Queen of the Blues”, Kate Meehan. Multi-award winner Kate will without a doubt be giving us some fantastic blues. But Kate will not be alone. Musical Director Cath Butler tells us that in a first for BASEQ we will be treated to a set of music from an all female local blues band. The name of the band is yet to be announced, but we hear they have begun practicing already and should be great on the night. And if to top it all off, the “all-star” female blues band will be joined for the evening by prominent local bands Blonde on Blue, with DeZ on vocals, and by Funk ‘n’ Blues, with Nici on vocals. All together that’s a great line-up to celebrate the female influence on contemporary blues music in fine style.
This event will have a door charge (to be announced) and will be a fund-raiser. Funds raised will be split (after costs) between BASEQ (35%) and Zonta (65%). BASEQ uses funds raised in such events to support the Blues in South East Queensland.

On this occasion, women’s service organisation Zonta is raising funds to support homeless women in and around Brisbane. Zonta supports a number of centres for homeless women, with a major focus at this time on Bahloo Women’s Youth Shelter, an indigenous community initiative offering emergency/overnight accommodation and other short term accommodation. It also provides support, referrals to counselling, medical and other services, employment and training support to young women in crisis.

Win a CD on the night!
BASEQ has received a number of generously donated CDs to raffle on the night of the Women in Blues show. All of them celebrate the music of women in Blues in Australia. Here they are (in no particular order).

Andrea Marr has kindly sent a copy of her latest album “Watch Me Work It”. Andrea and her band played a very fine set at last year’s Sunshine Coast Blues Festival and was recently seen at one of our Gold Coast jams. The CD is a fine offering with some very nice vocals from Andrea. Thanks also go to Gail Page for sending us a copy of her debut CD “Colours That Run”. Gail took three Chain awards at this year’s Australian Blues Music Festival in Goulburn, including Female Vocalist of the Year with the song “Through the Fire” which is on the album. Melissa Quigley of Chubby Rae and the Elevators has kindly donated a copy of the 2007 album “She Gets Unruly”. Melissa was also a winner of a Chain Award in 2007.

We’re grateful for a CD from local band Big Kitty and the Scaredy Cats. With a fine selection of blues, bluegrass and rockabilly, and some great vocals from lead vocalist Anna Eves, we think you’ll enjoy their debut album “Hola”. Stevie Paige’s latest CD is “III” and it’s a nice selection of Stevie’s vocals with her nice clean acoustic backing. Thanks Stevie for sending a CD.

Headline lady for the evening, Kate Meehan has donated a copy of her and Skip Landy’s latest CD “Pocketful of Blues” to raffle on the night. Thanks Kate. Finally, we have just received a copy of Kerri Simpson’s nice album “Sun Gonna Shine”. This showcases Kerri’s unique vocal style. Thanks Kerri.

BASEQ is very proud to contribute to this worthwhile cause and we hope that members and friends will come along to support as well as to enjoy the fantastic music. We’ll keep you posted as plans for Women In Blues come to fruition.
