BASEQ News and Announcements
February 2010
President's Pen (adapted from our February edition of The Groove)
Firstly Happy New Year to one and all. This is the time of the year when either fresh from the wonderful rest and recuperation, or recovering from our misdemeanours and excesses of the festive period, we realise that once again we are
off on another year of adventures. Let's hope that 2010 is a good one for all of us in BASEQ. One of the major undertakings of the year for BASEQ is that our 2009 winners of the Performer of the Year contest Jimi Beavis and the 385s will be winging their way to Goulburn in February to play their best and to represent us at the Australian Blues Music Festival 2010. Jimi and the band have been booked for three gigs throughout the Festival including a prestigious spot at the Chain Awards on Thursday night the 11th February when they play alongside Kate Meehan and Kim Churchill. Let's all wish them the very best of luck. Our thoughts will be with them.
Now I may have all of this a bit wrong, but it seems to me that Jimi Beavis and the 385s are the only Queensland act to be playing at Goulburn this year. Quite why this should be so is a bit unclear. But for the first time in many a year there will be a dearth of Sunshine State musicians at the Festival. This is a bit of a shame in my view as there's plenty of highly talented people up this way. But nevertheless, BASEQ will once again send its finest in the form of Jimi Beavis and the 385s and we thank ABMF for the opportunity granted to our Award winners for this year and the last two. And there's some other good news too. Our very own Cath Butler has been nominated for two Chain Awards, for Female Vocalist and New Talent of the Year respectively. People all round the country and indeed overseas are listening to Cath's CD "Dangerous Desires", which we reviewed last month. Congratulations Cath. We are keeping our fingers crossed that you'll come through on the night and bring a Chain trophy back with you from Goulburn.
The Australian Blues Music Festival is on from the 11th to 14th February. For more details, you can go to the website http://austbluesfestival.laingentertainment.com.au/ By the time you get this we will have started our calendar for the year with our first jam, back at the Jubilee Hotel on Sunday 31st January. Our jams at the Jube will still be on the last Sunday of each month, commencing at the sightly earlier time of 12.30 and finishing by 5.00pm. We are planning on having some great music for you at our jams in Brisbane and the Gold Coast this year. We will keep you informed.
All the best
Mike Freeman
